About

My name is Casey. I'm a software engineer, designer, music collector, DJ, and hobbyist photographer living in Evergreen, Colorado.

This website is a journal of the photos and videos I capture. I particularly enjoy shooting nature and landscape. I also take a lot of photos of my pets because they are adorable.

Gear

  • Fujifilm X-T4
  • Fujifilm XF 50-140mm F2.8
  • Fujifilm XF 50mm F1.0
  • Fujifilm XF 16-80mm F4
  • Fujifilm X100V

I own Fujifilm cameras because I like the design language of their bodies and lenses, and the character of the images they capture. Apart from some cropping, most of my photos are straight out of camera. I don't try to take perfect photographs; the opposite, in fact. The great philosopher, Brian Eno, said it better than I ever could:

“I remember a musician once saying to me that he wanted to create the perfect sine wave. The least interesting sound in the universe probably is the perfect sine wave. It’s the sound of nothing happening. It’s the sound of perfection, and it’s boring … distortion is character, basically. In fact, everything we call character is the deviation from perfection. So, perfection to me is characterlessness.”
“Sound becomes interesting, in other words, when a human being’s inherent imperfection is part of the process. Meaningful art is produced in the give-and-take between technological capability and human creativity.”

The Name

In neuroscience, the "task-negative network" is the part of the brain that is active when a person is not focused on the outside world and the brain is at wakeful rest, such as during daydreaming and mind-wandering.

I also quite like the premise of attention restoration theory, which asserts that people can concentrate better after spending time in nature, or even looking at scenes of nature.

Natural environments abound with "soft fascinations" which a person can reflect upon in "effortless attention", such as clouds moving across the sky, leaves rustling in a breeze or water bubbling over rocks in a stream.

Note: the "task-negative" nomenclature is outmoded. "Default mode network" is now preferred, and sounds much cooler, but that domain wasn't available. (source)
